Archibald Cox

Archibald Cox, Jr. ( born May 12, 1912 in Plainfield, New Jersey, † 29 May 2004 of Brooksville, Maine) was an American professor of constitutional law and state special prosecutor in the Watergate affair.

1960 Cox was a member of the campaign team of John F. Kennedy. In 1961 he was legal adviser to the president and as United States Solicitor General third man in the Justice Department of the United States. In 1965 he became professor of constitutional law to law school at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He advised the Parliament of Massachusetts in case of irregularities by officials.

On May 18, 1973, he was appointed by the Minister of Justice to the special prosecutor in the Watergate affair. He should clarify whether the government of President Richard Nixon in breaking into the campaign headquarters of the Democratic Party in the Watergate Hotel in Washington, DC was involved.

As a witness against Cox explained that Nixon years had to record on tape all conversations with employees, he requested all records from the office of the president, the Watergate had to content. The President rejected that and tried to convince Cox to waive the seizure. When Cox refused, he was dismissed by order of the President on October 20, 1973 ( Saturday Night Massacre ). The dismissal of Cox called on the U.S. Congress on the plan, which eventually led to the resignation of Nixon.

In 2001, Cox the Public Service Medal of the U.S. president was given by Bill Clinton.
