George Edward Cole

George Edward Cole ( born December 23, 1826 in Trenton Falls, Oneida County, New York, † December 3, 1906 in Portland, Oregon ) was an American politician and from 1866 to 1867, the sixth Governor of the Washington Territory.

Early years

George Cole attended the local schools of his home and then the Hobart Hall Institute. After that, he was employed at a retail outlet. About Illinois he arrived in 1849, right in the gold rush to California. In 1850 he moved to the Oregon Territory. There he became interested in the various business areas. He was, for example, in the trading business and offered on the Willamette River transports by means of steamers on. In addition, he was engaged also in the mine essence and in agriculture.

Political career

Between 1852 and 1853 he was a deputy in the Parliament of territorial Oregon. In the years 1859-1860 he served as Protokollist at the Federal Court for the District of Oregon. In 1860 he moved to Walla Walla in Washington Territory. Between March 1863 and March 1865 he represented this area as a delegate in the House of Representatives of the United States. In November 1866, the Democrat U.S. President Andrew Johnson was appointed as the new governor of the Washington Territory. This post he held only a few months to March 4, 1867. Upon his governorship, he moved to Portland, Oregon. There he was involved between 1869 to 1872 on railway construction. From 1873 to 1881 he was head of the post office in Portland. In 1889, he moved to Spokane; 1890-1892 he was then eunuchs in Spokane County.

After the end of his political career in 1892, Cole again devoted his business interests. He died on December 3, 1906 at the age of almost 80 years.
