Gropparello

Gropparello is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 2323 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Piacenza in Emilia -Romagna. The municipality is situated approximately 25 kilometers south-southeast of Piacenza and is part of the Comunità Montana Valli del Nure e dell'Arda. Gropparello lies partly in the Riserva naturale Geologica del Piacenziano in which there are numerous fossils.

History

Several castles are located in the municipality, which lies between 150 and 1000 meters above sea level. The ancient city Velleia lay around here. In the 9th century Charlemagne gave one of the castles to the Bishop of Piacenza.
