Ice hockey at the 1972 Winter Olympics

The Olympic ice hockey tournament of the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo (Japan) was the first that was not considered a world championship at the same time. The ice hockey games were held to 12 February during the period 3. Eleven teams participated in this tournament.

Were eligible to participate, the six teams in the A- group of the Hockey World Cup 1971 as well as the top five teams in the B group. To this end, Japan came as host. Since the GDR team opted not to participate, took instead of the planned twelve teams only eleven part.

The tournament started as the tournaments in Innsbruck and Grenoble with an elimination round. In this, the USSR was set upon the resignation of the GDR as the reigning world champion for the final round. The remaining pairs were compiled using a set list, which was based on the rankings of the World Cup 1971. It was also the first Olympic hockey tournament without Canadian participation.

Sovereign Olympic champion was the USSR, which won her fourth gold medal, before the big surprise team of the tournament, the United States, which was silver medalist as a B- group team.
