Jan Pronk (cyclist)

Mr Jan Pronk (* October 19, 1918 in Den Helder ) is a former Dutch cyclist.

In the 1940s and 1950s was Jan Pronk one of the best stayer in the Netherlands. Eight times he was 1944-1957 Dutch champion stayer. Internationally, he was successful: In the Track World Championships in 1951, he obtained behind his pacer Frits Wiersma the title, in 1947 he finished third in 1949, second in 1950 and 1954 World Championships.

The world title in 1951 reached Pronk with a trick: His compatriot Kees Bakker dropped back to last place, to round of Pronk and prevented during the race that he was overtaken by Pronk competitors. Bakker was paid by Pronk for this service, the world title celebrated the two on the way back on the train with champagne. This kind of Forum is now officially banned.

After his cycling career Pronk opened a tobacco shop.
