Jean-Pierre Chevènement

Jean -Pierre Chevènement ( born March 9, 1939 in Belfort ) is a French left - souveränistischer politicians. He was the first education and later defense minister under President François Mitterrand and interior minister under President Jacques Chirac.

Biography

Chevènement is the son of a teacher. The Chevènement family originates from Switzerland. The German name - Schwennemann - was franzi Siert in the 18th century to the current family name.

Chevènement took a degree in Political Science and attended from 1963 to 1965, the elite university École Nationale d'Administration in Strasbourg.

In 1998 he had to undergo a gall bladder operation, where there was so serious complications, that he lay for several days in a coma.

Political career

Since 1964 Chevènement was a member of the French Socialist Party ( SFIO ) and 1971 decisive role in the foundation as Parti Socialiste français (PS).

On May 22, 1981, he was appointed Minister for Research and Technology in the rank of Minister of State in the cabinet of Pierre Mauroy. On March 22, 1983, he resigned after he was recently elected mayor of Belfort.
