Karlovo

Karlowo [ karɫovo ] ( Bulgarian Карлово ) is a city and administrative center of a municipality of the same name in central Bulgaria, in the Plovdiv Oblast.

Karlovo is situated on the southern slopes of the Balkan Mountains im Rosental, which extends in the east to Kazanlak. The city has about 28,000 inhabitants and is the administrative center of the homonymous municipality Karlovo.

Geography

Karlovo to Plovdiv and Asenovgrad is the third largest city in the Plovdiv Oblast. History

The town originated in the late 14th century and had its heyday in the mid-19th century.

After the Ottomans had destroyed the neighboring Sopot, they founded in 1483 near to the area of ​​the village Suschiza the town of Karlovo in order to develop the administrative center of Nachija ( an Ottoman administrative unit ). In the center of Karlovo is still the Kurschum mosque from that time.
