Katovice (Strakonice District)

Katowice ( Katowice German ) is a market town in Okres Strakonice in the Czech Republic. The South-Bohemian Katowice is located about 6 km west Strakonic on the Otava and has about 1300 inhabitants.

History

The village was mentioned in 1045 in a document Břetislavs I. as a gift to the monastery Břevnov first time. For the year 1318 Katowice is attested as a village.

Since 2006, Katowice has the status of Městys.

Attractions

The most important feature of the village is that the St. Philip and St. Jacob consecrated village church ( Kostel sv. Filipa a Jakuba ). It goes back to a Romanesque building and was rebuilt several times in later years. Its present shape is the result of a major renovation Church in 1587, which was conducted by Thomassio Rossi di Mendrisio.

Near the village was located on the highest mountain Katovicer ( Katovická hora, 493 m), an old Slavic castle wall, which was once called Kněží hora. It was built at the turn of the 9th to the 10th century and served to hedge the basin Strakonic. In Okres Strakonice there are three more plants of this kind, and bear witness to the strategic location of this land.
