Kuopion Palloseura

Kuopio PS ( officially: Kuopion Palloseura or short KuPS) is a Finnish football club from Kuopio.

KuPS was five times Finnish champion (1956, 1958, 1966, 1974 and 1976), nine times runner-up (1950, 1954, 1964, 1967, 1969, 1975, 1977, 1979 and 2010), twice Cup winners ( Suomen Cup, 1968 and 1989 ) and played a total of 20 European games.

History

In 1923, the club was founded under the name Kuopion Palloseura. 1949, the club played its first match in the Mestaruussarja. Only in 1994 was to follow in the First Division, the first descent. 1950, was behind the Ilves Tampere Kissat - runner. 1954 had to be content with second place behind Pyrkivä Turku. But 1956 could KuPS celebrate his first championship. After an outstanding season KuPS had six points clear of HJK Helsinki. In 1958, Kuopio earned his second championship. 1959/60 would be in the European Cup of Champions KuPS encountered as champion from 1958 to Eintracht Frankfurt, but KuPS withdrew its application and Eintracht Frankfurt qualified for the knockout stages without a fight and pulled through until the finals.

1961 was almost relegated KuPS; Just one point separated at the end of the two-time Finnish champion of the relegation zone ten.

1966 KuPS was the third time in their history of Finnish football champions. Then Kuopio played in the European Cup of Champions 1967/68. Opponent was the French champions AS Saint- Étienne, the smooth prevailed 2-0 and 3-0.

As Cup Winners 1969 KuPS 1970 played for the first time in the European Cup winners. But against the Portuguese club Académica Coimbra and had after a 0-0 draw and a 0-1 disadvantage. 1974 succeeded KuPS the championship again, in the European Cup but could not Kuopio against the Polish representatives Ruch Chorzów for a 0:5 and a 2:2 the second round. The return match was held not in Kuopio, but in Mikkeli.

After the championship of 1974 was followed by 1975 runner-up. 1976 won KuPS up today for the last time the Finnish championship. 1976/77 they played as runner-up in the UEFA Cup against the Swedish team, Östers Växjö. After a 3-2 home win KuPS lost the return leg in Sweden 0-2 and was eliminated.

In the season 1977/78 of the European Champions' Cup is played as a champion of 1976 against FC Bruges. However, after a 0:4 and a 2:5 defeat eliminated from the Finns.

1979 they met as Finnish Viezemeister in the European Cup on B 1903 Copenhagen. After a 2:1 and a 4:4 KuPS reached the second round. There, they met again at a Danish club. Against Esbjerg fB however, there were two defeats and Kuopio difference.

The 1980s heralded the successful years of KuPS from final: Always KuPS placed in the Mestaruussarja now in the stands 6 to 10, 1988 we escaped relegation scarce.

1989 celebrated Kuopio yet again a success. In Suomen Cup Kuopio was after a 5-2 derby win at Koparit Kuopio and a 3-2 at HJK Helsinki in the semifinals. Here Kuopio defeated the FC Lahti sovereign Reipas 4-0 and moved into the finals. Against FC Haka, the Cup defender, KuPS won with 3:2 and could look forward to a European Cup participation in the 1990/91 season. Against Dynamo Kiev in the Soviet Union, however KuPS retired after a 2:2 and a 0:4.

The first relegation from the First Division, now renamed Mestaruussarja was 1994., After six years of absence KuPS celebrated in the 2001 season with Rank 8 a successful comeback in the top division. Two other descents in the subprime Ykkönen followed in 2003 and 2006, but succeeded in the following year the direct promotion back to the First Division. In the 2008 season the team finished in last place and secured the league only in the relegation against FC Viikingit. After a 12th place in 2009 KuPS was in the 2010 Finnish runner and qualified for the first time since 1990, again for an international competition. In the Europa League 2011/12 the team in the second qualifying round won the first leg against Gaz Metan Medias, Romania 1-0, but dropped out after a 0-2 defeat in the return leg from.
