Coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved on 30 October 2009 by the State Directorate of Leipzig.

Blazon: "Under a silver shield main, is three blue wave beams, split of blue and green; forward a golden castle: over a crenellated wall with gate a crenellated tower. behind a silver gin accompanied by three golden four-leaf flowers. "

In order to find a new circle coat of arms, a design contest was held. In November 2008, a draft was declared the winner, who suggested a lion on a blue background, surrounded by five stars. In discussions it was pointed out that this draft represents only a small part of the new circle and also there is the likelihood of confusion with existing coat of arms. On 3 June 2009 the council decided a different design with a large majority. The coat of arms of the district of Leipzig is in three parts. It combines three heraldic motifs, which stand for the three new district of Leipzig culturally and economically dominant regions.

  • In chief three blue wavy lines symbolize the Leipzig Lake, the newly emerging in the wake of the reclamation and restoration of the former opencast mine holes and counting the Saxon Lakeland landscape south of Leipzig.
  • The castle in the ( heraldic ) right half of the shield refers to the Gnandstein, belonging to the city Kohren- Sahlis hamlet of the same name. The castle is regarded as Saxony's best preserved Romanesque fortification and is the flagship of the tourism region Kohrener country.
  • For the eastern part is the circle ( heraldic ) left half of the shield, in the confluence of Zwickau and Freiberger Mulde is represented by a silver gin on a green background. It is the coat of arms adopted in slightly varied form of the former Mulde circle, accompanied by golden flowers, which were in turn an allusion to its predecessor circles.
