List of Ogura Hyakunin Isshu Poets

The list of poets in Ogura Hyakunin Isshu contains 100 poets from the ancient to early medieval literature of Japan, a period of about five to six hundred years. Most of them lived in the Heian period ( 794-1185/1192 ), the heyday of Japanese court poetry.

It was in these 100 poets almost exclusively aristocrats at the court of Tennō ( about one-third of the family of the Fujiwara ). A few exceptions were, inter alia, noble official, former aristocratic members of the Buddhist clergy and some ladies and attendants.

For many, however, the exact survival data or the social status to date are not known. Any references to the wider social context are given in the comment box.

On the other hand, some female poets in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu are listed only to its social context (eg, " mother of " ), their names are sometimes forgotten.

The collection follows in the order of those from the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu. The illustrations of the authors come from a Meiji- temporal layout for an Uta- Garuta game.
