List of solar eclipses in the 20th century
This list contains all the eclipses of the 20th century, which were observed from the Earth, including those with pure partial visibility.
Overview
It occurred 228 solar eclipses, which is less than the long term average of 238 solar eclipses per century. In 79 years, only two eclipses took place, which is the minimum possible number. The theoretical maximum of five eclipses was reached in 1935, four eclipses occurred in the years 1917, 1946, 1964, 1982 and 2000. Two eclipses within a month there was in July 2000.
The following table shows the number of eclipses of the 20th century, differentiated according to the different types of eclipses:
Both the longest total and the longest annular eclipse took place in 1955: The longest total solar eclipse on June 20 had a maximum totality duration of 7 minutes and 8 seconds. The longest annular was on 14 December, the annular phase lasted while a maximum of 12 minutes and 9 seconds.
Legend
The following table contains all the eclipses of the 20th century. It contains the following columns:
- Time: The time data are in Terrestrial Dynamic Time ( TDT ). At the beginning of the century TDT and Universal Time (UT ) were approximately the same, at the end of the century was the difference between TDT and UT 64 seconds ( At).
- Type: Possible types are total, annular, hybrid and partial.
- Saros: The number of the Saros cycle, which belongs to the darkness. If the number is odd, find the darkness in the vicinity of a rising moon node instead, is it just on a descending.
- Gamma: The gamma value of a solar eclipse, ie the minimum distance of the shadow axis from Earth's center.
- Size: The maximum size of the darkness according to the definition used by NASA.
- Duration: If the period of total or annular phase of the eclipse at the place at which the axis of the umbral shadow cone of the moon to the center of the Earth is closest (Greatest Eclipse). This usually corresponds approximately to the longest period of darkness.
- Path width: The width of the path of the umbra or the zone of the annular eclipse during Greatest Eclipse (see duration) in kilometers. For total eclipses, this value is almost the maximum width of the umbra.
- Visibility Area: areas where the eclipse is visible. In total, hybrid or annular eclipses initially specified including areas with partial visibility, then separately the areas with total or annular visibility. In such eclipses a web link is also included before the listing of areas with annular or total visibility that calls a page from NASA showing the eclipse path.
