Longjumeau

Longjumeau is a commune with 21,510 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Essonne in the Ile- de -France region; it belongs to Arrondissement Palaiseau and is the administrative center of the canton of Longjumeau. Through the city flows the Yvette.

History

  • Longjumeau is one of the oldest towns in the valley of the Yvette on the road from Paris to Orléans. Sarcophagi dating from the 4th century have been found at the place where now stands the hospital.
  • The parish is attested since the 13th century
  • Longjumeau and Chilly- Mazarin had the same gentlemen, starting with the Count of Dreux. King Louis IX. both places were the Dukes of Brittany. Later they were in possession of the house of Anjou.
  • On March 23, 1568 Peace of Longjumeau between Catholics and Protestants to the end of the Second Huguenot War was signed.
  • 1596 came Martin Ruzé, treasurer of King Henry IV in the possession of the place. His great-grandson Armand -Charles de la Porte, 1661 married Hortense Mancini, a niece of Mazarin. Their granddaughter married in 1777 the Prince of Monaco from the House Grimaldi, who was then the last Lord of Longjumeau.
  • Longjumeau was the first post office between Paris and Orléans; 30 to 40 accommodations could accommodate travelers.

Attractions

  • ( 1250 ) The Gothic church of Saint -Martin 's Monument historique since 1910.
  • The bridge of the Knights Templar (13th century) is one of the oldest surviving bridges of the Ile- de -France and since 1930 also Monument historique.

Trivia

Created in the 19th century Opéra Comique under the title The postilion of Lonjumeau by Adolphe Adam (Paris 1836), popularized the name of the city outside of France.
