Lucena, Philippines

Lucena City has a Philippine component city and capital of the province of Quezon, in the administrative region IV, Calabrazon. It has 246 392 inhabitants ( census May 1, 2010 ) living in 33 barangays. It lies on the bay of Tayabas and is classified as a city of the second income class in the Philippines.

Geography

The city center is about 98 km southeast of the capital of the Philippines, Manila. Your neighboring municipalities are Pagbilao in the northeast, Sariaya and Tayabas City in the southwest to the northwest. The topography of the city is characterized by lowlands and hilly landscapes juice, on the coast, smaller marshes stretch.

Lucena City is connected via the Maharlika Highway and the railway with the Bicol region and the capital region of Metro Manila. The daily railway is operated by the Philippine National Railways. Ferries connect the city with the islands of Marinduque, Masbate, Romblon and Palawan.

History

The history of the city began 1571/72, when the Juan de Salcedo explored the Konquistator today Quezon province and subjugated. Between 1580 and 1583 the Franciscans Juan de Plasencia and Diego de Oropesa founded the city Tabayas. Lucena was at this time a district, which the Spaniards " Buenavista " and called later renamed " Oroquieta ".

On November 5, 1879, the first parish was established in this district and the independent administrative unit of the Municipality of Lucena was founded on 1 June 1882. On March 12, 1901, the seat of the provincial government of Tayabas was moved to Lucena. The title of a major city was Lucena awarded on 17 June 1961 it was classified as a highly urbanized on 1 July 1991.
