Mack Mattingly

Mack Francis Mattingly ( born January 7, 1931 in Anderson, Indiana ) is a former American politician of the Republican Party. From 1981 to 1987 he represented the U.S. state of Georgia in the U.S. Senate.

Biography

Mattingly was born in Anderson, Indiana, where he also grew up. In the early 1950s, he did military service in the United States Air Force. He was stationed at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, Georgia. After his military service, he studied at Indiana University Marketing. He graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He then worked for 20 years at IBM in Georgia. He then got out with IBM and founded his own company, M 's Inc., in Brunswick.

From the early 1960s, Mattingly involved in the Republican Party. 1966 candidate Mattingly unsuccessfully for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Between 1968 and 1975 he was deputy chairman of the Republicans in Georgia, then for two years as its chairman. In 1980, he was then allowed to prevail in the elections to the Senate seat from Herman Talmadge with nearly 30,000 votes against the incumbent. Then he represented from 1981 to 1987 Georgia, together with Sam Nunn, in the U.S. Senate. Mattingly was the first Republican since Reconstruction represented Georgia in the Senate. During his tenure, he was a member of the following committees: United States Senate Committee on Appropriations, United States Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, United States Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, United States Congress Joint Economic Committee and the United States Senate Select Committee on Ethics. In the election in 1986, Mattingly could not prevail against his rival candidate Wyche Fowler.

After retiring from the Senate Mattingly was appointed in 1987 by U.S. President Ronald Reagan appointed assistant secretary -general for defense support for NATO in Brussels. He was appointed by President George HW Bush as U.S. ambassador to the Seychelles in 1992. He remained there until 1993. Subsequently, he retired into private life. In 2000 he joined again in the public appearance when he was defeated by Zell Miller in the Senate election.

Mattingly was married from 1957 until her death in 1997 with Carolyn. Together they have two daughters. Since 1998 he has been married to his second wife Leslie. Together, they live in St. Simons.
