Marek Malík

Marek Malik (* 24 June 1975 in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia) is a Czech ice hockey player who is under contract with HC Vitkovice Steel in TipSport Extraliga since October 2009.

Career

Marek Malik began his career in his hometown at HC Vitkovice before he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1993 by the Hartford Whalers in the third round, 72nd. He stayed for a year in Vitkovice, before moving to North America for the 1994/95 season.

In the following two years he played mostly in the American Hockey League farm team in at the Springfield Falcons. After eight NHL games in the first two years he was in season 1996/97 on 47 NHL bets. The following year he moved to Sweden to Malmö IF, but a year later he returned to the United States. The Whalers had moved to Carolina and the new affiliate team in the AHL was Beast of New Haven, but the majority of the season he played with the Carolina Hurricanes. This time he made ​​the breakthrough. For the season 2002/ 03 he moved to the Vancouver Canucks and stayed there one more season. In the season he won jointly with Tampa Bay's Martin St. Louis NHL Plus / Minus Award.

In the strike season of 2004 /05 Malik returned to his homeland and played for HC Vitkovice. After the lockout, he received a three-year contract with the New York Rangers prior to the 2005/06 season. Malik remained until 2008 when the Rangers before he signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in October 2008. A year later he became a so-called Unrestricted free agent and was only decided in October 2009 to return to the Czech Republic. First, he again played for his hometown club in the Extraliga before he was loaned to the Genève -Servette HC of the National League A in November 2009. End of July 2010 he signed a contract extension for three years at HC Vitkovice Steel. At the end of the following season, he reached with his team's playoff final, where they failed with 1:4 victories on HC Ocelari Třinec.

Internationally

Marek Malik took part in 1993 with the Czech Under-18 selection of the U18 European Junior Championships, where they won the bronze medal. In the following two years he played for the U20 national team and participated with this at the Junior World Championships in 1994 and 1995.

For the men's national team of the Czech Republic, he participated in the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. Two years later he was a member of the Czech Olympic team at the Olympic Winter Games in Turin. He won the bronze medal with the Men's selection.
