Meleuz

Meleuz (Russian Мелеуз, Bashkir Мәләүез ) is a city in the Republic of Bashkortostan (Russia) with 61 390 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located on the western edge of the Southern Urals, about 200 km south of the capital Ufa Republic at the mouth of Meleuz in the Belaya, a left tributary of the Kama.

Meleuz is the Oblast administratively subordinated directly and as the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

Meleuz emerged in the second half of the 18th century and was since the 1780s station on the mail route Ufa - Orenburg. End of the 19th century the place was important trade and craft center of the southeastern Bashkiria, received in 1938 the status of an urban-type settlement and 1958 city law.
