Mercedes-Benz 260 D

Mercedes- Benz 260 D ( 1938)

The Mercedes -Benz W 138 was introduced under the name " Mercedes -Benz 260 D " as a derivation of the type 200/230 at the Berlin Motor Show in February 1936. Together with the Hanomag Diesel record he was the first diesel car in the world.

Development

Already in the autumn of 1933 they had developed a diesel engine at Daimler- Benz AG, which was incorporated into various test cars of the type of Mannheim. The six-cylinder in-line engine had 3818 cc displacement and developed 80 hp ( 59 kW) at 2800 rpm. This was due to the enormous vibrations at high speeds to frame openings, so that the concept was again discarded.

Subsequently, they were content with four cylinders with less power and built the new engines in 1936 in about 170 Pullman Landaulet type 230 a. The above- controlled engine with 2545 cc displacement delivers 45 hp ( 33 kW) and accelerates the vehicle to 90 km / h Over a four-speed gearbox ( with overdrive 1:0,73 ), the rear wheels are driven. All four wheels have hydraulically operated drum brakes and are suspended individually, back to a swing axle with coil springs in front by two transversely-mounted leaf springs.

All these cars were used as taxis and operating satisfactorily.

With the change in type 230, model W 21 to W 143 model you used the chassis and bodywork for the diesel. Thus, the diesel was available not only in taxis with long chassis, but also in four-seat sedans and convertibles. At the same time, the cars received a new, normal four-speed gearbox without overdrive. The top speed increased to 94 km / h

1940, the production of diesel cars was discontinued due to the war and resumed only after the Second World War in 1949 with the model 170 D.
