Nuevo León

Nuevo León is a state in northern Mexico, bordering the states of Tamaulipas to the east, Zacatecas and San Luis Potosí to the south, and Coahuila to the west and shares 15 km border with the U.S. state of Texas. He has 3.8 million inhabitants on 64,924 km ². Capital and only urban center of importance is Monterrey.

History

King Philip II of Spain authorized Luis Carvajal y de la Cueva in 1582, a new independent colony in New Spain (Nueva España, the former Mexico) to establish what should be called Nuevo Reino de León. Carvajal landed in New Spain with a hundred converted to Catholicism in Portuguese Jews aboard the Santa Catarina. He founded the settlement of San Luis Rey de Francia, today Monterrey.
