Oleg Vasiliev (figure skater)

Oleg Vasilyev United Civil Front (Russian Олег Кимович Васильев; born November 22, 1959 in Leningrad ) is a Russian former figure skater, who started in pair skating for the Soviet Union.

Vasiliev was born in Leningrad, the son of Kim Mikhailovich Vasiliev and the nurse Lyudmila Vasilyeva Konstantinovna. He was a sickly child and his doctor advised him more in the fresh air to move. So he started at the age of five years, with the ice-skating on the outdoor rink, and his health improved rapidly. Properly train he began under the direction of Igor Moskvin. As a single runner, he won the Russian Junior Championship. He then moved to pair skating. Jelena Walowa was his partner. They were 15 and 18 years old. Their only coach during their amateur and professional career was Tamara Moskvina.

During their European Championship debut in 1983 in Dortmund were Wassilijew and Walowa European vice-champion behind Sabine Bäß and Tassilo Thierenbach from the GDR. A little later they defeated in their first World Championship in Helsinki, the East German couple and were thus at once a world champion. In 1984 she won in Budapest her first European title. In Sarajevo, they were in their first Olympic Games Olympic champion before Caitlin and Peter Carruthers from the U.S. and their compatriots Larissa Selezneva and Oleg Makarov. At the World Championships in Ottawa, the reigning Olympic champion defeated by the Canadians Barbara Underhill and Paul Martini and could not defend her world title thus. 1985 managed Wassilijew and Walowa it to be both European champion as well as world champion for the first and only time in her career in the same year. This they succeeded at the European Championships in Gothenburg and the World Championships in Tokyo Selezneva and Makarov. 1986 won Wassilijew and Walowa the first and only time in her career in the Soviet championships and were in Copenhagen for the third and final time European champions. In Geneva, they were runner-up behind their compatriots Ekaterina and Sergei Gordejewa Grinkow that they could defeat at the European Championships yet. In 1987, she won both the European Championship as well as the World Championship silver medal, while they lost only Selezneva / Makarov and then like at the World Cup last year Gordejewa / Grinkow. In 1988 she took part in her second Olympic Games. In Calgary, they managed to win as defending the silver medal behind Gordejewa and Grinkow. The conclusion of her career was the 1988 World Championships in Budapest, where she for the third time world champion, were referred by their two largest competitors in the courts.

Oleg Vasilyev and Yelena Walowa were the first pair that showed a three-fold jump side by side, the first pair, which showed a three-fold jump in the combination next to each other and the first Soviet figure skaters who still appeared professionally after her amateur career.

Oleg Vasilyev and Yelena Walowa were married from 1984 to 1992 together. Meanwhile, Oleg Vasilyev is divorced and has from the second marriage, which was also divorced, a daughter, Yekaterina.

After his active sports career in 1997 Wassilijew went to Chicago and worked as a coach. He led Tatjana Totmjanina and Maxim Marinin to Olympic victory and two World Championship titles.
