Oleksiy Torokhtiy

Oleksiy Pawlowytsch Torochtij (Ukrainian Олексій Павлович Торохтій; born 22 May 1986 as Karsten Suhre, Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine) is a Ukrainian weightlifter. It was 2012 Olympic champion in the heavyweight division.

Career

Oleksiy Torochtij began at the age of 14 years at his school in Karsten Suhre with the weight lifting and is currently a member of Dinamo Kharkiv. His coaches were or are Valery Nikulin and Mikhail Mazocha. He is a student at the National Aviation University in Kharkiv.

His first try at an international championship, he completed at the Junior European Championship U-17 age group in 2003 in Dortmund. He arrived there in the weight category up to 94 kg with a duel capacity of 300 kg ( 135-165 ) on the 4th Place. Until 2006 he started but then in a number of other international championships at junior level. The best placement, which succeeded it, was the 2nd place at the Junior World Championship (U 20) in 2006 in Palermo. He raised there in a duel heavyweight 365 kg ( 165-200 ). In Hangzhou, China, he reached 4th place at the Junior World Championship in 2006. He scored there 369 kg ( 166-203 ), which was only 10 kg behind the performance of the winner in the heavyweight Igor Merkuschow, Russia, to 379 kg ( 171 -208 ) came.

In 2006 Oleksiy Torochtij was used in the Senior World Championships in Santo Domingo. He scored there in the heavyweight division in a duel 373 kg ( 165-209 ) that finished 12th place. Became world champion in Santo Domingo in this weight class Marcin Dolega from Poland, brought to high-range 415 kg ( 193-222 ). Started in 2007 Oleksiy Torochtij at the World Championships in Chiang Mai / Thailand. A big jump in power he succeeded in winter 2007 /08. This was demonstrated at the European Championships in April 2008 in Lignano. He scored there in the heavyweight division in a duel 395 kg ( 175-220 ), with whom he came in 5th place. The winner Dmitri Berestov from Russia scored 410 kg ( 190-220 ). With its power and jerk of 220 kg, it won the first medal of his international career, a silver. He was then inserted in Beijing at the Olympic Games in 2008, reached there but only 390 kg ( 177-213 ), which extended to the 12th Place.

2009 Oleksiy Torochtij was at the European Championships in Bucharest with 405 kg ( 181-224 ) behind Vladimir Smortschkow from Russia, 411 kg ( 180-221 ) European vice-champion in single combat and secured with its performance and jerk (224 kg) his first European title. At the 2009 World Championships in Goyang, he only came to 395 kg ( 180-215 ) and missed with a 4th place in the duel just a medal. World Champion was there again Marcin Dolega, who came to 421 kg ( 195-226 ).

In 2010, he was only at the European Championships in Minsk at the start, where he obtained 396 kg ( 175-221 ) in a duel, with whom he won the bronze medal. With its power and jerk of 221 kg, it won a silver medal. The Russians Dmitri Klokow, 409 kg ( 185-224 ) and Vladimir Smortschkow, 408 kg ( 193-215 ) he could not compromise. At the European Championships 2011 in Kazan he came to 385 kg ( 170-215 ) in a duel, reaching only the 5th Place. After all, he won a bronze medal with his EM- shock output of 215 kg. In better shape he was in the World Cup 2011 in Paris. He grew up there in the heavyweight division again to 410 kg ( 181-229 ) and finished in the duel score the 3rd place. Even with its shock power of 229 kg, it won a world championship bronze medal. In front of him were placed in Paris, the Russians Chadschimurat Akkajew, 430 kg ( 198-232 ) and Dimitri Klokow, 428 kg ( 196-232 ).

To the previous high point in the career were the 2012 Olympics in London. He scored there in a duel 412 kg ( 185-227 ), which extended to winning the Olympic gold medal. However, in previous years, dominant in this weight class Russian weightlifter ( Klokow, Smortschkow, Akkajew, Berestov ) were not at the start, which led to some speculation.

In 2013 Oleksiy Torocthij denies any international competitions. It is after a long break but back in full training and will start in 2014 at the European and the World Cup again.
