Phaya Mengrai District

Amphoe Phaya Meng Rai ( in Thai: อำเภอ พญา เม็ง ราย ) is a district ( Amphoe - Administrative District) is the province of Chiang Rai. The Chiang Rai province is located in the extreme north of the northern region of Thailand.

Geography

Neighboring districts are (from west clockwise): Amphoe Wiang Chai which, Wiang Chiang Rung, Chiang Khong, Khun Tan and Thoeng Chiang Rai province.

History

Phaya Meng Rai was established as a sub-district ( King Amphoe ) on 6 May 1981 consisting of the three Tambon Mae Pao, Mae Tam and May Ya that were cleaved from the circle Thoeng. On August 12, 1987 Phaya Meng Rai received the full Amphoe status.

Etymology

The district is named after the King Meng Rai the Great, the founder of the Northern Thai Kingdom of Lan Na, named. He reigned from 1259 to 1317 ..

Management

The circle is divided into five subdistricts (tambon ), which are further subdivided into 69 villages ( Muban ).

Phaya Meng Rai has a small-town status ( thesaban tambon) and covers parts of tambon Meng Rai and Mae Pao.

There are also five " Tambon Administrative Organizations" (TAO, องค์การ บริหาร ส่วน ตำบล - administrative organizations) in the district.
