Richard Hanson Weightman

Richard Hanson Weightman ( born December 28, 1816 in Washington DC, † June 20, 1861 at Wilson 's Creek, Missouri ) was an American politician. Between 1851 and 1853 he represented the New Mexico Territory as a delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years

Richard Weightman attended private schools in Washington and Alexandria ( Virginia). Then he studied until 1834 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Between 1835 and 1837 he was at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, but without a degree do there. Until 1841 Weightman then studied law. He has worked as a lawyer but later. After moving to Missouri he was in 1846 during the Mexican- American War Captain in a unit of light cavalry. From 1848 to 1849 he was paymaster in the U.S. Army.

Political rise

In 1851, Richard Weightman moved into the New Mexico Territory, where he edited a newspaper in Santa Fe. In addition, he was appointed to the Indian Officer. Politically Weightman was a member of the Democratic Party. As their candidate, he was elected the first delegates of this territory in the U.S. House of Representatives. There he graduated between 4 March 1851, the March 3, 1853 a legislative period. In 1852 he abandoned a bid again.

After his time in the federal capital, Washington is dedicated Weightman again the newspaper business. After a few moves, he settled in Independence, Missouri. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Richard Weightman joined the Confederate States in whose army he was appointed colonel. During the Battle of Wilson 's Creek in June 1861, he was mortally wounded.
