Bernard Shandon Rodey

Bernard Shandon Rodey ( born March 1, 1856 County Mayo, Ireland, † March 10, 1927 in Albuquerque, New Mexico ) was an American politician. Between 1901 and 1905 he represented the New Mexico Territory as a delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years and career

Bernatd Rodey emigrated with his parents in 1862 from Ireland to Canada. He attended the public schools in the province of Quebec. After moving to Massachusetts, he studied law in Boston. In 1881 he moved to Albuquerque in New Mexico territory. There he became private secretary to the head of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad Company. In 1882, he was also a stenographer at the court of the second judicial district. After his 1883 was admitted as a lawyer in Albuquerque, he began to work in this profession. Between 1887 and 1888 he was a legal representative of his new hometown.

Congress delegate

Bernard Rodey was a member of the Republican Party. In 1889, he was elected to the Territorial Senate; a year later he was a member of the Constituent Assembly of New Mexico. In the congressional elections of 1900, Rodey was chosen as the candidate of his party as a delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he replaced Pedro Perea on March 4, 1901. After a re-election in 1902 he was able to exercise his mandate until March 3, 1905. In 1904 he applied unsuccessfully for a further term. He lost in the primaries of his party against William Henry Andrews.

In 1906, Rodey was appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt to the Federal District Judge for Puerto Rico. This office he held as a successor of Charles F. McKenna to 1910. In 1908, Bernard Rodey delegate to the Republican National Convention, on the William Howard Taft was nominated as a presidential candidate. At this congress to Rodey sat resolutely for the rapid accession of the future states of New Mexico, Arizona and Oklahoma to the United States. Between 1910 and 1913, Bernard Rodey was then Attorney General in Alaska. In this capacity he was involved in the investigation into a fraud scandal in the coal industry. He then founded his own law firm in Albuquerque.
