Georgia Lee Lusk

Georgia Lee Lusk ( born May 12, 1893 in Carlsbad, New Mexico; † January 5, 1971 in Albuquerque, New Mexico) was an American politician. Between 1947 and 1949, she represented the first electoral district of the state of New Mexico in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years and career

Georgia Lee Lusk, nee Witt, attended the public schools of their home and then studied at the Highlands University in Las Vegas. She then attended the Colorado State Teachers College and by 1914 the New Mexico State Teachers College, where she was trained as a teacher. She then worked as a teacher. Between 1919 and 1943, she led the way, the family's ranch. In the education sector, she rose to Schulrätin on in Lea County. This office she held from 1925 to 1929. Between 1931 to 1935 and again from 1943 to 1947 she had as Superintendent of Public Instruction the supervision of the school system in the state of New Mexico. From 1941 to 1942, she oversaw the schools in Guadalupe County.

Political career

Georgia Lusk was a member of the Democratic Party. In the years 1928 and 1948 she attended as a delegate the respective Democratic National Conventions. In 1946 she was elected as a candidate of their party in the U.S. House of Representatives. There she took on 3 January 1947, a seat, which had remained vacant since the appointment of Clinton Presba Anderson to the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture in June 1945. Since she was no longer nominated for the next elections, they could do only one term in Congress until January 3, 1949.

Between 1949 and 1953 she was a member of a commission that dealt with demands to the government in connection with the costs of war. From 1955 to 1960 she ran again the school system of New Mexico. She died in January 1971 and was buried in Carlsbad.
