Antonio Joseph (politician)

Antonio Joseph ( born August 25, 1846 in Taos, Mexico, † April 19, 1910 in Ojo Caliente, New Mexico ) was an American politician. Between 1885 and 1895 he represented the New Mexico Territory as a delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Life and work

Born in present-day Taos County Antonio Joseph visited the Lux 's Academy in Taos, the Bishop Lammy 's School in Santa Fe, the Webster College in Missouri and the Bryant and Stratton 's Commercial College in St. Louis. He then worked in retail. In the years 1878-1880 he was a district judge in Taos County.

Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. In 1882 he became a deputy in the House of Representatives of New Mexico Territory. After the congressional elections of 1884 he went as a delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he Francisco Antonio Manzanares replaced on March 4, 1885. After he was re-elected in each of the following congressional elections, Joseph was able to complete up to March 3, 1895 a total of five legislative sessions in Congress. But in 1894 he lost to Thomas B. Catron. After that, he was 1896-1898 Member and 1898 also president of the Territorial Senate. As a result, he went back to his private business, including now also included the hotel industry. Antonio Joseph had become, to a large land owner in his homeland. He died in April 1910 and was buried in Santa Fe.
