Harry Teague

Harry Teague ( born June 29, 1949 in Grace Montreal, Caddo County, Oklahoma ) is an American politician (Democratic Party). From 2009 to 2011, he represented the second electoral district of the state of New Mexico in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years and career

Harry Teague came from an impoverished family who had leased a farm. He spent the first nine years in rural Oklahoma, where it was not even running water in the house. In 1958 the family moved to Hobbs, New Mexico. There Teague attended high school, but he dropped out to work in the oil fields. He founded his own company, where about 250 people are employed today. He is a member of the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association. With his wife, Nancy, Harry Teague has two children and five grandchildren.

Political career

Between 1999 and 2006, Teague was a member of the County Council ( County Board of Commissioners ) in Lea County. In the congressional elections of 2008 he was able to prevail as the candidate of his party with 56% of the vote against Republican Edward R. Tinsley and move into the U.S. House of Representatives. The election result was in the national trend, in which the Democrats were able to record a great electoral success and achieved with the election of Barack Obama in the presidential elections its peak. Teague was for 28 years the first Democrat who won the second election district of New Mexico. He took his seat on 3 January 2009 and was a member of the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the Committee on Veterans Affairs. In the congressional elections in 2010 he lost his seat to the Republicans Steve Pearce, who had also been his predecessor.
