Pedro Perea

Pedro Perea ( born April 22, 1852 in Bernalillo, New Mexico, † January 11, 1906 ) was an American politician. Between 1899 and 1901 he represented the New Mexico Territory as a delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years

Pedro Perea was a cousin of Francisco Perea, who had represented the New Mexico Territory in the U.S. House of Representatives 1863-1865. Pedro attended St. Michael 's College in Santa Fe, the Georgetown University in Washington and thereafter until 1871, the Saint Louis University in Missouri. He then worked in agriculture and especially in the sheep. In addition, he was also involved in the banking industry and was president of the First National Bank of Santa Fe. He held this office 1890-1894.

Political career

Perea was a member of the Republican Party. In the years 1889, 1891 and 1895, he belonged to the territorial Government in New Mexico. In 1896 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention, on the William McKinley was nominated as presidential candidate of the party. 1898 Perea was elected as a delegate of its territory to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he Harvey Butler Fergusson replaced on March 4, 1899. Since he resigned in 1900 to run again, Pedro Perea was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1901.

After his time in the House of Representatives to Perea again devoted his business interests in banking and livestock. In year of his death he was still appointed insurance commissioner of the territory. Pedro Perea died in June 1906 in his birthplace.
