Francisco Antonio Manzanares

Francisco Antonio Manzanares ( born January 25, 1843 in Abiquiu, Mexico, † September 17, 1904 in Las Vegas, New Mexico ) was an American politician. Between 1884 and 1885 he represented the New Mexico Territory as a delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years and career

Born in Rio Arriba County today Francisco Manzanares first visited the Spanish-speaking schools of his home and only later learned English. In 1863 and 1864 he studied at the Saint Louis University in Missouri. Then he began to work in Kansas City at the company Chick, Browne and Co.. He later became co-owner of the company, for which he was active in various areas in the Midwest and the western United States. He came back in the New Mexico Territory. There he helped build the infrastructure and was involved in the establishment of some banks.

Political career

Francisco Manzanares was a member of the Democratic Party. In 1882 he was a candidate for the office of delegates in the U.S. House of Representatives. In this election, he defeated Tranquilino Luna. But Manzanares appealed against the election result, which was granted in March 1884. Thus he could represent between March 5, 1884, the March 3, 1885 its territory as a delegate in Congress. In 1884 he abandoned a bid again.

After the end of his short tenure in Congress is devoted Manzanares again his business interests. Between 1896 and 1897 he was a member of the County Council in San Miguel County ( Board of County Commissioners ). Francisco Manzanares died in September 1904 and was buried in Las Vegas.
