Royal League

The Royal League is a veranstalteter of the football associations of Denmark, Sweden and Norway competition for soccer club teams to determine a Scandinavian master. It was originally planned for five years and was first held in November 2004. In the 2007 /08 season the competition was canceled because no sponsor could be found who were interested in the broadcasting rights. For the 2008/ 09 season, a new edition was planned. On 11 October 2008, however, announced that there will be no edition of the competition, as the TV rights could not be sold. Nevertheless, there were plans for the 2009/10 season to continue the competition under the name of Royal Cup with a total of 15 teams.

Were eligible to participate in each of the four top ranked teams in the leagues of the three countries involved. Brøndby IF and FC Copenhagen and Vålerenga Oslo took this part in every season.

With the new competition, the long pause between seasons in Scandinavia and the associated revenue losses should be bridged.

Mode

In the first season the twelve participants first entered into three groups of four teams in the return game against each other, the two best teams from each group were qualified for a second group phase, determined in two groups of three clubs, the two finalists were.

In the second edition 2005/ 06, only one group phase was played with three groups of four teams, with the top two teams and the two-point and torbesten third place winners qualified for the quarterfinals, which as well as the subsequent semi-final in a return match was decided.

In the third season of the mode of the group stage was maintained, the quarter and semi-finals were decided, however, only in a single game.

The final was designed in the first two editions to 90 minutes. Stand it then draw, followed directly after a penalty shootout. Since 2006 /07, an extension of 30 minutes is provided at the score of draw after 90 minutes earlier.
