Sacro Monte di Orta

The village of Orta San Giulio, the superior " Holy Mountain " Sacro Monte d' Orta was built at the end of the sixteenth century, designed by the Capuchin monk Cleto from Castelletto Ticino. The chapels all overlook the Lake Orta, which thus provides an extremely atmospheric and picturesque landscape.

The complex is dedicated to St. Francis as followers of Christ. This constitutes its peculiarity - that he is dedicated to a saint and not the life of Christ or the Virgin Mary; thus it is quite different from the other holy mountains.
