Saint-Juan

Saint- Juan is a municipality in the French department of Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Saint- Juan is located on 480 m, 7 km south of Baume- les -Dames and about 26 km east of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in the Jura, on the so-called first plateau, a broad basin between the Jura - edge chain ( French ) in the north and the plateau in the southeast.

The area of ​​12:09 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by the wide first Jura plateau, the average is 450 m and is slightly wavy. It forms a wide, partially karstified basin and shows a loose structure of arable land, meadows and forest ( Bois de la Faye ). The northwestern boundary runs in the dale of Audeux, which is a gorge incised into the plateau. To the southeast, the municipality's area extends over a 80 m high ground level on the adjacent heights with the Bois de Bouvassot. Here the highest elevation of Saint- Juan is achieved with 607 m.

Neighboring municipalities of Saint- Juan Silley - Bléfond and Adam -lès- Passavant in the north, Passavant in the east, and Orsans Aïssey in the south and Bretigney -Notre -Dame in the West.

History

In the Middle Ages Saint- Juan belonged to the rule Passavant, which was under the suzerainty of the Counts of Montbéliard since the 14th century. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.

Attractions

The church of Saint - Juan was originally built in Romanesque style shapes and owns a valuable organ. In the village are farmhouses are preserved in the characteristic style of the Franche -Comté from the 18th to 19th centuries.

Population

With 179 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Saint- Juan is one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1881, 365 people were still counted ), only relatively small fluctuations were recorded since the early 1960s.
