Esnans

Esnans is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Esnans situated at 300 m, 3 km west-southwest of Baume- les -Dames and approximately 25 km east-northeast of the city of Besançon ( straight line ). The village is located in the Doubs Valley a slightly elevated position on the left southern side of the river, in the extreme north- western ridges of the Jura, at the northern foot of Mont Dommage.

The area of ​​3.72 km ² municipal area comprises a portion of Doubstals. The Doubs flows here with several turns by a usually around 500 m wide, flat floodplain to west southwest and simultaneously forms the waterways of the Rhine- Rhone Canal. The valley is deeply incised between the mountain ranges of the Jura - edge chain. From the river, which forms the northern boundary of the municipality, the municipal area extends southward over the flood plain, the terrain terrace of Esnans and a steep wooded slope to the crest of the Jura - edge chain, which forms an anticline in geological- tectonic terms. It is divided into the heights of Mont Dommage (570 m ) and the Bois de la Cote, where 588 m is the highest point of Esnans is achieved. The directed against the Doubs steep slope is traversed in different places of Kalkfelswänden.

Neighboring communities of Esnans are Baume- les -Dames in the north and east, Silley - Bléfond and Bretigney -Notre -Dame in the south and Ougney - Douvot and Fourbanne in the West.

History

In the Middle Ages Esnans belonged to the dominion of Passavant, which came under the suzerainty of the Counts of Montbéliard in the 14th century. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. In 1809, the formerly independent municipality Grange- Willotey was merged with Esnans. Since 2001 Esnans is part of the municipal association Communauté de communes du Pays Baumois.

Attractions

From a former manor house from the 16th century, which burned down during World War II, a tower and the chapel are preserved.

Population

With 38 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Esnans is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1896 133 people were still counted ), only small fluctuations were recorded since the early 1970s.

Economy and infrastructure

Esnans was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) embossed village. Even today, the inhabitants live on the merits of the activity in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector, there are few jobs in the village. Some employed persons are also commuters who engage in the surrounding larger towns of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road, leading from Baume- les -Dames by Ougney - Douvot. The nearest links to the A36 motorway is located at a distance of about 9 km.
