Grosbois

Gros Bois is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Gros Bois is located at 368 m, 4 km west of Baume- les -Dames, and 24 km east-northeast of the city of Besançon ( straight line ). The village is located in the rolling countryside between the river valleys of Doubs and Ognon, on a sloping to the southwest slope above the north adjoining the Doubs Valley plateau.

The area of ​​2.96 km ² municipal area includes a portion in the extreme north- western ridges of the Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by a plateau, which is on average 340 m and located north of the Doubstals spreads. It is mainly consisted of arable and meadow land, but also shows some areas of forest ( Bois du Val ). In the whole area there are no surface watercourses, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground. To the east of the municipality extends to the bottom elevation of Gros Bois, an elongated ridge that runs parallel to the Doubs Valley. Here, the highest peak of Gros Bois is achieved with 436 m.

Neighboring communities of Gros Bois are Baume- les -Dames in the north and east, Fourbanne in the south and Séchin in the West.

History

In the Middle Ages Gros Bois belonged to the dominion of Clerval, which was under the suzerainty of the Counts of Montbéliard since the 14th century. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Since 2001 Gros Bois is part of the municipal association Communauté de communes du Pays Baumois.

Attractions

The church of Saint -Laurent was built in 1786 and restored in 1880; the current bell tower is from 1904.

Population

With 230 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Gros Bois is one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1891 123 persons were still counted ), a striking population growth was recorded since the mid-1970s again. Since then, the population has more than tripled.

Economy and infrastructure

Gros Bois was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) embossed village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises. Meanwhile, the village has also changed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village has good transport links. It is located near the main road N83, which runs from Besançon to Montbéliard. The nearest links to the A36 motorway, which runs through the municipality, is located at a distance of about 9 km. Another road connection with Fourbanne.
