Verne (Doubs)

Verne is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Verne is located at 381 m, 5 km north of Baume- les -Dames and about 31 km northeast of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located on a high plateau between the river valleys of the Doubs River in the south and Ognon in the north, the creek Viotte.

The area of ​​7.82 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the gently undulating countryside north of the Doubs. The main part of the area is occupied by a plateau, which is on average 390 m. It consisted mainly of arable and meadow land, but also shows some forest areas. The only above-ground river is the river Viotte, which rises at Rillans and seeps in the area of Verne, before becoming a karst spring in Fourbanne in the Doubs Valley again becomes apparent. The plateau is karstified and has several caves and shafts on. To the east of the municipality floor extends to the height of Les Mondrevaux (444 m). In the west the plateau from the woods back of the Bois Verdot ( 445 m) is flanked. With a narrow strip, the municipality's area extends to the southwest up to the height of the Bois du Raz. With 478 m find the highest mountains of Verne is achieved.

Neighboring communities of Verne are Trouvans and Rillans in the north, and Vergranne Autechaux in the east, and Luxiol Fontenotte in the south and Tournans in the West.

History

In the Middle Ages Verne belonged to the dominion of Clerval, which was under the suzerainty of the Counts of Montbéliard since the 14th century. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Since 2001, Verne part of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays Baumois.

Attractions

The church Saint -Martin was built on the site of a medieval house of worship in 1740 in the classical style. It has a rich interior. In the village are farmhouses in the traditional style of the Franche -Comté from the 17th to the 19th centuries as well as a former mill have been preserved.

Population

With 128 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Verne is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1901 248 persons were still counted ), only small fluctuations were recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and infrastructure

Verne was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. In addition, there are today some of the local small business enterprises. Meanwhile, the village has also changed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road that leads from Autechaux after Rognon. The nearest links to the A36 motorway is located at a distance of about 5 km. Further road links exist with Luxiol, Vergranne and Rillans.
