Salekhard

Salechard (Russian Салехард; Nenets Саля'харад, house on peninsula ) is a Russian city with 42 544 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in northern Siberia. It is the capital of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.

Geography

Salechard is located on the right bank of the Ob, something above and southwest of the Obbusens. Just south of the Arctic Circle runs Salechard what the Arctic Circle monument commemorates the city. The distance to Moscow is 2436 kilometers in southwestern direction. The nearest towns are Labytnangi, 16 km north- west of Salechard located on the opposite bank of Ob, and Vorkuta, some 155 km north-west.

History

The town was founded in 1595 as a Cossack fortress and was called until 1933 Obdorsk ( Обдорск ), which translates as " place on the Ob 'means in the Komi language. By the end of the 18th century, the fortress lost its strategic importance, each year Winter Fairs were held instead in Obdorsk. In addition, the settlement was sometimes used as a place of exile.

1933 received Obdorsk, which was three years before the national capital district of the Yamal -Nenets, Nenets his name Salechard, which literally means "settlement at the Cape ." 1938 Salechard was officially recognized as a city. End of the 1940s began under the direction of Stalin with the construction of a new port in Nowy Port, about 270 km north-east of Salechard, and with the expansion of the Arctic Circle railway from Salechard to Igarka the Yenisei. However, after Stalin's death, the project was forgotten, and Salechard lost its importance. To date, it is not connected through the Arctic Circle railway with the westerly Vorkuta, since there is no bridge over the Ob after Labytnangi.

Economy

The industry is represented rather weak in Salechard with some food establishments (among fish processing). A major part of the economic infrastructure of the city forming raw material and service companies, including the natural gas company Novatek, which has its headquarters here, as well as divisions of large companies Uralsvyazinform, Gazprom and Lukoil.

Transportation

Labytnangi is accessible in summer by ferry and in winter by ice road. In addition, the city has a river port with connections to Khanty-Mansiysk and Omsk, as well as an airport. A highway to Nadym is under construction.
