San Giovanni d'Asso

San Giovanni d' Asso is a place with 891 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the province of Siena, Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The place is located just north of the Val d' Orcia in the countryside of the Crete Senesi and extends over 66 km ². It is located about 30 km southeast of the provincial capital, Siena and 80 km south-east of the regional capital Florence. The name suffix d' Asso refers to the location of the passing river Asso, who spends 12 of its 38 km here. Other important water bodies in the municipal area are the Torrenti Serlate ( 8 of 18 km in the municipality ) and Trove ( 6 of 16 km). The place is located in the climatic classification of Italian communities in the zone D, 1873 GG.

At its districts include Lucignano d' Asso, Montelifrè, Monterongriffoli (276 m, about 10 inhabitants), Montisi and Vergelle.

The neighboring municipalities are Asciano, Buonconvento, Montalcino, Pienza, San Quirico d' Orcia and Trequanda.

History

The first mention of the place was the church of San Pietro in Villore in 714 Castello (castle ) has been known since the 12th century. 1151, the village belonged to the Count di Paltonieri Forteguerro, which was under the dominion of Siena, then he went over to the Ardengheschi. 1256 Orlando Buonsignori bought the castle. At the beginning of the 14th century, the Salimbeni came to power. After the Pannilini the Republic of Siena took over in the mid-15th century, the rule in place.
