San Godenzo

San Godenzo is a municipality with 1197 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Florence in the Italian region of Tuscany.

Geography

San Godenzo is located about 50 km northeast of Florence in the mountains of the Apennines, on the border with the province of Forlì -Cesena (Emilia -Romagna), the (907 meters altitude) is performed here by the mountain pass Passo del Muraglione. The road to the Emilia-Romagna leads here on the state road SS 67 The sparsely populated municipality covers an area on the northern foothills of Mount Falterona, east of the Sieve Valley. Approximately one third of the territory is part of the Foreste - Casentino National Park. The place belongs to the administrative community Comunità montana Montagna Fiorentina and is located on the eponymous river San Godenzo. In the climatic classification of Italian municipalities is one of the place to the zone E, 2891 GG.

Besides the village of San Godenzo to the municipality include the districts ( Frazioni ) Casale, Castagneto, Castagno d' Andrea ( the highest situated settlement, 725 m), Cavallino, Petrognano and San Bavello.

The neighboring municipalities are Dicomano, Londa, Marradi, Portico e San Benedetto (FC), Premilcuore (FC ), Santa Sofia ( FC) and Prato Vecchio Stia.

History

San Godenzo originated with the founding of the Benedictine abbey around the year 1028. The territory belonged to the late Middle Ages to the Counts Guidi, and came in 1344 (San Godenzo and San Bavello ) or 1366 ( Castagno ) under the dominion of Florence.

After the unification of Italy in 1861 the city grew from about 3400 to about 4100 inhabitants (1911 ). Thereafter, the population fell steadily until 1991, when about 1,100 inhabitants were counted.

The main town of San Godenzo was on the Gothic Line and was almost completely destroyed by German troops during the retreat in 1944.

Churches

  • Abbazia di San Gaudenzio - The Benedictine abbey in the center of San Godenzo was founded around 1028 by the Bishop of Fiesole Jacopo il Bavaro. The three-nave Romanesque church was consecrated in 1070. It contains a Bernardo Daddi ascribed winged altar ( 1333) and works of Baccio da Montelupo ( wooden statue of Saint Sebastian ) and Franciabigio ( Annunciation ).
  • Chiesa di Santa Maria All'Eremo - The church was mentioned in 1021 for the first time.
  • Chiesa di San Martino - The Church in Castagno d' Andrea is from the year 1840 after the full stan -ended destruction in the Second World War, it was rebuilt and contains an apse fresco by Pietro Annigoni. .
  • Chiesa di San Niccolò - Church in the village of Casale
  • Pieve di San Babila - The Church in San Bavello 1103 was mentioned for the first time. During an earthquake in 1919, it was destroyed and built in its present form in 1920-1924.
  • Chiesa di San Giorgio - Church of Petrognano was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1919 in 1938 again.
  • Chiesa di Santa Maria a Ficciana - Church between Casale and Castagno d' Andrea, which was already mentioned in 1276 and earlier origin

Personalities

The Renaissance painter Andrea del Castagno was born in the village of Castagno, today named after him Castagno d' Andrea.
