Sergei Ponomarenko

Sergei Ponomarenko Wladilenowitsch (Russian: Сергей Владиленович Пономаренко ) (* October 6, 1960 in Moscow ) is a Russian former figure skater, who started ice dancing for the Soviet Union and the United team.

With Tatjana Durasowa was Sergei Ponomarenko twice junior world champion, but in 1978 and 1979. The couple never competed at European and World Championships. They parted after winning the Junior World Championship title. Sergei Ponomarenko sought and found a new Eistanzpartnerin in Marina Klimova. With it, he was the first start of the European Championships 1983 right away fourth. Already in the following year, the pair succeeded by winning the bronze medal at the European Championships and the Olympic Games, the final breakthrough. In subsequent years, the pair won every year, without exception, until the end of 1992 Amateur career medals at ISU Championships.

At the beginning of their international amateur career Marina Klimova and Sergei Ponomarenko stood in the shadow of their compatriots Bestemjanowa Natalia and Andrei Bukin. They won in the period from 1985 to 1988 always silver behind them, also at the Olympic Games in Calgary. Only when Bestemjanowa / 1988 Bukin their amateur career ended, Klimova / Ponomarenko could win titles. Marina Klimova and Sergei Ponomarenko were coached by Natalia Dubova and later by Tatiana Tarasova and started for the club Spartak Moscow. In 1986 they fell by their very elegant freestyle "Golden Waltz " on. The "Golden Waltz " later became a compulsory dance.

Marina Klimova and Sergei Ponomarenko married in 1984, the couple has two sons. Following her amateur career, she turned professional. The couple currently lives in Morgan Hill, California, and work at Logitech Ice in San Jose, California, as a figure skating coach.

Marina Klimova and Sergei Ponomarenko were recorded in 2000 in the Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
