Silverlink was established with grant of the operating license in 1997 as North London Railways. In their area of responsibility, the operation and maintenance of the North London Line, a line were spanning the City of London in a semi-circle of Richmond in the west to North Woolwich in the east of the city. In the course of the company's expansion to the West London Line, the Watford DC Line and the route London - Northampton was seen as inappropriate and chose the name Silverlink as a new name. The company was divided into two divisions: Silverlink Metro for connections in the immediate vicinity of London and Silverlink County for compounds with a longer path and connections in the environs of London.

In 2006 Silverlink invested in a partnership with the bank HSBC 13 million British pounds in an electrical and mechanical overhaul of the Silverlink County fleet. Furthermore, the features of the Silverlink Metro Area were overtaken lasting. The Willesden Junction station was equipped with elevators, renovated restrooms and improved customer service. In Northampton, a customer lounge and a tour were established. In addition, all stations were equipped progressively with camera surveillance and locks.

The concession of the company ran out on 11 November 2007. The Silverlink Metro routes ( the North London Line, the West London Line, the Watford DC Line and the Gospel Oak to Barking route ) were taken on this day from Transport for London and have since operated under the name of London Overground. The remaining Silverlink County routes were advertised along with the routes from Central Trains as part of a newly formed West Midlands franchise.
