Formation

In 1993, the chairman of EMI Classics, Richard Lyttleton, Paul McCartney asked for the 100th anniversary of the EMI Group in 1997 to write after Paul McCartney's Liverpool Oratorio, another classic work. First composition work began in the year 1993 and were changed by the software Cubase in 1995, which makes it possible that running on the keyboard compositions can be printed on paper. The composer David Matthews transformed the grade printouts in arrangements for orchestra. Other musicians such as Richard Rodney Bennett, who supervised the other orchestration, and John Harle added the musical parts in the desired shape.

The sample recordings for the album took place on 3 and 4 March 1997 at Abbey Road Studios in Studio One instead and have been documented by the BBC in the film The Making of Standing Stone, who on 23 November in the U.S. and 26 December 1997 was broadcast in Britain on television; the film's director, Christopher Swann. The album was recorded over three days from 30 April to 2 May 1997, the same club, and subsequently mixed in the studio of Paul McCartney in Sussex from 12 to 19 May 1997. On July 12, the work on the album were completed, so that the album was released in September 1997.

A limited edition of 2500 copies, double vinyl LP was released in the UK on 1 December 1997.
