Geographical Location

Südergellersen is between the nature reserves of the Lüneburg Heath and the River Elbe - Drawehn. The community belongs to the Samtgemeinde Gellersen, which has its headquarters in the town of Reppenstedt.

History

The village was first mentioned in 1314.

Background:

From the fourth millennium BC, the remains of a stone tomb of the Neolithic period, but which is now completely destroyed originates. In the district of the village also quite a number of grave hills of Stone and Bronze Ages have been preserved. Impressive are the copies at the sports ground of the village. This group of grave mounds originally consisted of at least a dozen copies. With the expansion of the sports field in 1950 three of them excavated ( Dig Museum Lüneburg ), another in 1978 archaeologically investigated. The oldest burial dates from the late Neolithic period ( around 2000 BC ), other finds include in the subsequent Bronze Age; inter alia, a spearhead and the remnant of a bronze sword ( around 1800 BC). The transition from the Late Bronze Age and the early Iron Age date, a number of urns ( about 800 BC ). In the immediate and wider environment more finds have been discovered, whose dating validates the entire temporal spectrum of this group of monuments and demonstrating that it must still have been far more extensive once. Overall, all seven of these grave mound groups are known in the district Südergellersen. In the neighboring district valley saint was examined at the beginning of the nineties the Institute of Historic Building near an urn cemetery known since the 19th century, a Bronze Age hill which contained one of the most impressive jewelry costumes of Lüneburg Bronze Age.

Worth mentioning are also a number of Iron Age settlement features in the catchment area of the stream.

On March 1, 1974, the neighboring community Heiligenthal was incorporated.

Coat of arms

The municipal coat of arms consists of a shield divided (4:3), above upright on green background 7 ( Stake way arranged ) golden acorns down on golden background for half a mill wheel black. The acorns are representative of the seven oak trees in the village. The mill wheel symbolizes the village's patron saint valley, which is one of Südergellersen and where a water mill stands.

Traffic

To the motorways A 7 and A 39, which lie to the west and east of the district, is about 20 km and 12 km. Südergellersen is connected to the south in about 3 km Distance to the highway 209 Luneburg Amelinghausen - Soltau to the road network.
