The South Loop was a 7.747 km long section of the Nürburgring race track in the Eifel. It was built together with the North Loop between 1925 and 1927. The route went south of the start and finish by the Eifel forest of the district waste stream, with a gradient of up to 11% and climbs to 16 %. The difference in height was 143 meters. Along the way the road was 8 feet wide, the start and finish area 20 meters.

South Loop as a track version of the Nürburgring to 1982

The start and finish straight and the back straight of the Nürburgring were up to 1982 components of the so-called concrete loop. With its North and / or South Loop were combined according to the event for the racetrack. A total of four different routes to the same start and destination plant, the same boxes as well as the same connection at the Nürburgring were possible, took to the paddock:

  • Concrete loop ( 2.292 km )
  • South Loop in combination with concrete loop ( 7.747 km )
  • Nordschleife in combination with concrete loop ( 22.835 km )
  • Total price: Combination Concrete Loop / South Loop / South Loop ( 28.265 km )

In a race that was held on the South Loop (in combination with the concrete loop ), the vehicles arc about 550 meters after the start, turn left towards Bränkekopf from. After another 5.6 kilometers, it had passed through the southern loop completely and came to the back straight behind the pits plants. From there we went into the north bend of concrete loop, which led back to the start and finish. For smaller events or tests that do not need the starting and target system, the southern loop had utilize independent of the concrete loop by a cross connection.

In races for which the South Loop with the Nordschleife was connected to the overall rate, arc the vehicles that came from the southern loop, at the end of the back straight left towards Hatzenbach from - as in the race at the Nordschleife.

Terms of Südschleife to 1968

The possibility of south and north loop as the opening race on June 18, 1927, 28.265 km long total price to join was no longer used after 1931. On the southern loop then ran mostly motorcycle races. From 1928 to 1931, from 1958 to 1968 and the Eifel race for motorcycles and cars took place but there. On 31 July 1960, the South Loop was the scene of not the driver's World Championship scoring Grand Prix of Germany for Formula 2 cars, Joakim Bonnier before the Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips, both on Porsche 718 /2, won. 1965 and 1968, the Grand Prix of Germany was held for motorcycles in the Motorcycle World Championship on the South Loop.

Conversion of the Nürburgring

In the remodeling of the Nordschleife 1970/71 the South Loop was not involved. Thus, the safety standard of the south loop was lower and mid -1970s, no longer track races took place there. Instead, there were several mountain race starting in waste stream, the lowest point of the track. Hazards was contrary to the usual direction up towards the start and finish of the concrete loop. Since the return of the vehicles took place after waste stream over the persistence of circular course of the South Loop, an interruption -free racing operation was possible. Such mountain race could be carried out within one day with all the training and scoring runs.

During the construction of the new Grand Prix circuit at the Nürburgring in 1983 and 1984, the South Loop was abandoned. Your southwest part is now part of the public county road K72. The northern part is road access to the car park in the southern part of the Grand Prix circuit. The former route section at Bockberg leads you through an industrial area in waste stream and there carries the name Südschleife as official street names.

Further use of the remaining parts of the South Loop

Stages of the Rally Köln- Ahrweiler lead each year of the remnants of the South Loop. In addition, the Düsseldorf automotive and motorsport club showed 05 ( DAMC 05) in the course of his classic car festival vintage cars at the former racetrack.
