Supercopa Libertadores

The Supercopa Sudamericana - also known as Super Copa Sul - Americana, Super Copa Libertadores da América since dos Champ and Super Copa João Havelange - was a South American club football competition, which was held in the years 1988 to 1997. To him each the winners of all Copa Libertadores lotteries participated.

In order to allow the playout 1997, the CR Vasco da Gama participation in the competition was recognized as an official competition predecessor of the Copa Libertadores Campeonato Sudamericano de Campeones of 1948.

From 1992 to the Copa Masters de Supercopa was annually provided a competition with all previous winners of the Supercopa, which, however, only in 1994 a second time took place. Moreover, even the Copa de Oro Nicolás Leoz took place in 1993, 1995 and 1996; a competition which in turn should bring together the winners of the Copa Libertadores, the Copa Conmebol and the two aforementioned competitions.

Finally, the short-lived Competitions Copa Mercosur and Copa Merconorte were established for the top clubs of the southern, northern South America, respectively, from 1998. 2002 followed these ultimately strongly rejected in the European UEFA Cup Copa Sudamericana.

Statistics

  • A total of 18 different clubs from six countries participated in the competition.
  • Only Cruzeiro and Independiente won the title twice.
  • Clubs from Argentina won the competition six times, three times Brazilian clubs and even a club from Paraguay.

The individual game years in detail

Atlético Nacional from 1990 Medillin took no part, as the South American federation CONMEBOL Games in Colombia after armed attack on a referee in a match between Atlético Nacional and CR Vasco da Gama prohibited.
