Suzuki Boulevard S40

The Suzuki LS 650 Savage is a motorcycle model of the Japanese manufacturer Suzuki, which was produced from 1986 to 2000 for the German market. In other countries a little modified model called Boulevard S40 is available until today. The Savage has a square Huber- cylinder engine with four valves and a balance shaft. Its roots go back to the Suzuki DR 600. Power is transferred to the 15-inch rear wheel is realized by means of a toothed belt. The engine was available in Germany only with 27 hp to 1994. Then there was also in Germany the standard international 31- PS version. The transmission initially had four courses, starting from 1991, it came with five gears. Until 1988, a flat handlebar was available.

The Suzuki LS 650 Savage is designed as a chopper, thus it is not suitable for high cornering speeds. The Savage is a robust, very friendly conversion motorcycle.

Weak points of the motorcycle

The timing chain tensioning system as a weak point of the engine applies the timing chain tensioning system which should be checked at least after a mileage of about 20,000 km. The cause lies in the construction of the chain tensioner. It mainly consists of a bush and a rack. With progressive (normal ) elongation of the timing chain, the rack moves out wider and wider to compensate for the chain elongation and to ensure the proper voltage. The tensioner moves further and further until it falls apart and the chain no longer holds under tension. When disintegration of the tensioner is to be expected with an engine failure, the piston strikes then against the valves. It is often replaced by workshops precaution, the entire valve train. Frequent untertouriges Drive promotes the elongation of the chain.

Also, the camshaft, the camshaft is prone to pitting, and to be exposed through the normal wear and tear on the cam shaft Gußlunker. Gußlunker are air pockets produced during molding of the part. By then uneven surface of the wear on the body increases greatly and leads to subsequent damage to the valve train.

Starter pinion From the Year 1996 was installed a slip clutch at the starter. This is to prevent the starter motor from being damaged. However, the slip clutch is retrofitted in general and costs about 40 €. Sometimes this damage is recognized by a hoarse - Grinding and Knocking noise when starting.

Belt drive Another point that deserves attention is the Pulley / front wheel of the belt drive. Often solves the mounting nut and the drive belt moves on the shaft. This movement causes wear / abrasion of both the wheel and the shaft. For checking the lid can be removed via the pulley. Started to play at this point can be detected by rust on the mounting surface of the pulley. If there are rust marks on this surface two things should be done: 1 Check the condition of the mounting surface of the wheel and replace if necessary and / or tighten the nut again accordingly; 2 to check the state of the mounting surface of the shaft from which the wheel is driven. If necessary, the shaft must be replaced. Because it is the transmission output shaft, this repair is expensive. Already existing game or a previously solved pulley can definitely be detected on a beating noise when accelerating. The cause will be the following: This pulley is factory painted, the paint peels off and the first play is there. Due to the constant load changes while driving the clearance increases then ever. Excessive tightening torques therefore not necessarily help, rather the removal of the color before Pulleymontage. A front pulley costs about 90 €, a new wave of about 180 €, their installation, however, about 700-800 €. It is recommended that the fixing nut of the front pulley to control all 6000 km tightness.

Swingarm bearings it is important to consider the swingarm pivot ( as with every used motorcycle purchase). In the LS 650, the left bearing is especially interesting. In the frame tubes is created over time as normal condensation. Since the motorcycle is, however, lack of center stand always parked on the side stand, a portion collects in the left swing arm bearing and where it leads to corrosion and wear. The swing arm pivot is important for stability.

Tire age Many CB 650 were used as " fair-weather bikes " with a gentle procedure, therefore the tire tread depth is at relative low mileage despite the age of some motorbikes and well. The rubber compound of the tire becomes harder with age, however, and the grip decreases. Therefore, also check the tire age.

In addition, of course, are all points to consider regarding the operating and traffic safety.
