The Somoni ( Tajik Сомонӣ / Somonij; Russian сомони ) is the currency of Tajikistan.
A Somoni is divided into 100 Diram. The Somoni replaced on 30 October 2000 the Tajik ruble, the exchange rate was 1 Somoni for 1000 rubles. Initially, only notes were issued since 2001 coins. The banknotes are made from 100 % cotton and has the following denominations:
The following coins are in circulation:
- 5, 10, 20, 25 and 50 Diram
- 1, 3 and 5 Somoni
However, it will be preferred to coin generally small bills. Specifically, the coins of 1, 3 and 5 Somoni are hardly in circulation.
The name Somoni is derived from the Samanids. The Samanids were a Persian dynasty in Central Asia. The currency was named after the father of the Tajik nation, the Samanidenherrscher Ismail I ( Tajik Исмоил Сомонӣ Ismoil Somonij ), named.
