The producer of the song Quincy Jones Michael Jackson was commissioned to write a song, in which two men fight over a woman. In the days from 14 to 16 April 1982 the song in the Westlake Studios, Los Angeles was recorded.
Musical structure
Musical songs is based on the configuration of the 32 -bar AABA, the frequent repetition of the text line "The girl is mine" serves as an additional structurant. In composing Jackson oriented inter alia, his ballad She's Out of My Life.

Accusations of plagiarism
In terms of the composition of The Girl Is Mine a total of two plagiarism allegations have been made. In 1984, Fred Sanford claimed that Jackson had sampled from Sanford's band the song Please Love Me Now. The process won Jackson, because it was not a sample at the sound material in question. A second hearing was held in 1993. The plaintiffs in this case were the musicians Reynaud Jones and Robert Smith. As a result, the parties settled out of court.
