History

During excavations on the castle or Kirchberg in Thomasburg were in 1997 Neolithic ( Neolithic ), made imperial period and medieval finds. A chisel of flint is the outstanding find of this excavation. Tee marks on the cutting edge, starting from the neck are to be regarded as traces of improper use of the Thomas Burger Flint chisel. Probably the device was similar to one used today chisel used. Such chisels, could have found as adze use include, in the northwest German single grave culture. The Neolithic finds from the excavation, mostly downs and only a few devices, are dated to the late Neolithic period, an era that is as well as the subsequent Bronze Age, reach their early offshoot Nordostniedersachsen over the Elbe, occupied by grave finds from around the Thomasburg. The numerous deductions and the low incidence of finished tools allow the presumption that the Stone Age finds are to be seen on the Thomas Burger Kirchberg as an indication of the existence of a work space that was located in the peripheral area of a water body in a prominent location on an outcrop. Here a comparison is evoked with the topographical situation of some - to find places in Ilmenau and Luhe valley - but much older. Since the Neolithic and medieval finds were stratigraphically not be separated on the Thomas Burger Castle Hill each other, it is very likely that the former are to be built in leveling work within, or has been exposed to the existing castle in the early or high Middle Ages to later spills to be on the resulting soil.

Thomas Castle was first mentioned in 1124 and was owned by the monastery Rastede in Oldenburg. Because of genealogical relationships may be assumed that the plant was once inherited by the noble family of Bill Unger on the counts of Stade to the House Convent of the Counts of Oldenburg. The Thomas Burger Castle Wall is - next to the Bleckeder Castle and the ruins of the castle Neuhaus - the best preserved castle in the eastern district of Lüneburg.
