Vendémiaire

The Vendémiaire ( also German wine month or vintage month) is the first month of the Republican Calendar of the French Revolution. He follows the Sansculottiden of the previous year, it follows the Brumaire.

The name is derived from the French vendange ( Vintage ). The Vendémiaire is the first month of autumn quarter ( mois d' automne ). He begins around September 23 and ends around October 22.

In history is the Vendémiaire of 1795, broke out as a directed against the Republic of royalist uprising in Paris and was shot by Napoleon Bonaparte with artillery.

Day names

Like all months of the French Revolution calendar had the Vendémiaire 30 days, which were divided into 3 decades. The days were named after agricultural plants, except for the 5th and 10th day of each decade. The 5th day ( Quintidi ) was named after a pet, the 10th day ( Decadi ) to an agricultural implement.

Contrary to the initial proposal of Fabre d' Églantine the 24th Vendémiaire not Grenésienne, but amaryllis was named. The two names are synonyms for the same plant.
