Verkhnyaya Toyma

Verkhnaya Toima (Russian Верхняя Тойма ) is a Selo in Northwest Russia. The place belongs to the Arkhangelsk Oblast and has 3462 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). It is the administrative center of the Rajons Verkhnaya Toima.

Geography

Verkhnaya Toima is located about 340 kilometers southeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Arkhangelsk. The village lies on the right bank of the Northern Dvina River, at the mouth of the eponymous river Verkhnaya Toima in those. The nearest towns are Beresnik, about 135 kilometers to the north, and Kotlas, about 140 kilometers south of Verkhnaya Toima.

History

Verkhnaya Toima is one of the oldest existing cities in the Arkhangelsk Oblast. It was first mentioned in 1137 in a novgorod certificate, which had to pay tribute to the Novgorod diocese to content. 1478 was the place in the possession of the Grand Duchy of Moscow and in 1552 was part of the Werchnetomskaja volost ( Верхнетоемская волость ). In April 1924, Verkhnaya Toima center of the newly established Rajon Werchnetomski within the Northern Dvina Gouvernementes ( Северо - Двинской губернии ). 1937, eventually became part of the Arkhangelsk Oblast.

Economy and infrastructure

As in the rest of the Arkhangelsk Oblast is also in Verkhnaya Toima the forestry and wood industry is one of the main economic sectors. In addition, the food industry has a great importance. So there is in Rajon operations of the dairy industry, meat processing, animal husbandry and agriculture.

About a ferry crossing with the left side of the Dvina consists of Verkhnaya Toima from a road connections with Kotlas and Arkhangelsk. From here there is a regular bus service to the surrounding villages. Verkhnaya Toima has no connection to the railway network. The nearest railway station is in Kotlas. About the ferry to other towns along the Dvina are accessible in the ice-free period from spring to autumn. Northeast of the town there is a small airport, which currently is not for passenger transport in operation.
